Gabby Malpas

Gabby Malpas는 뉴질랜드의 화가입니다.

어린 시절부터 가족들에게 그림 그리기를 장려받았고 도자를 전공했지만

나중에 잉크와 수채화로 재료를 바꾸었습니다.

아주 어렸을 때 입양되었던 작가는 백인인 가족 구성원과 달리

자신이 중국인이라는 것을 알게 되었습니다.

전업화가로 일하면서 생모를 만났고,

삶과 작업스타일에 영향을 많이 받았다고 해요.

작가는 페라나칸 문화 속 동서양의 조화에 깊이 빠져든 작가의 작품은

다문화적인 영향을 반영하고 있습니다.

(페라나칸: 영국 식민지에 정착한 중국이주민들의 후손)

동양의 민화 같아보이면서도 등장하는 생물들이

서양의 것들이라 색다른 느낌이 들어요 :-)
